Launch Party Planning

I just got back from scouting a couple of venues on my list of venues to scout for the It’s All That Glitters launch party and in the process connected with someone who works for another venue that is also on my list. Networking, people, it’s all about networking.

A good portion of this week has been spent putting on paper what my ideal launch party would look like. It’s already gone through a number of iterations in scale, both up and down. Of course, as soon as I start adding up the cost for my entire wish list, I’ll be auctioning some organs on eBay in hopes of making it all a reality. Speaking of which, does anyone still use eBay for auctions anymore?

I’m not ready to share too much of what I’m concocting just yet for fear of it not coming together as dreamed, but the basics consist of a gallery display of photos from the book, a burlesque show featuring performers from the book, and a group book signing that will give you the rare opportunity to have ink scrawled in your book by not only me, but a number of performers in the book.

In short, it’s all about the book.

Sugar On Top

The past few weeks have been nothing short of exhausting. It all started with a ramp-up of work to get ahead on deadlines so that I could join BUZZINE at my first-ever SXSW in Austin, TX. I didn’t have many expectations going into the festival, and now with the luxury of full hindsight, I’m glad I did not.

Overall it was a good experience, but had I set any expectations of seeing any particular band, I would have been disappointed. As it happened, the few bands I tried to see on purpose experienced some form of technical difficulty or went on later than scheduled so I had to miss them in order to get to other shows to shoot them for BUZZINE.

As a work trip, it was a grand success. We shot video interviews with 16 bands and close to 50 photo galleries, many of which have been posted and more of which are to come.

Interviews included the likes of Kasabian, Flosstradamus, Eric Burdon, and The Jealous Sound.

I managed to consume delicious BBQ twice during the adventure, and also discovered an amazingly delicious Thai restaurant called Mai Thai. Photos of the trip will emerge in the coming days.

Though I returned from Austin on Monday, I have not stopped working since as we have been busy post-processing the content from SXSW for the site. This, combined with battling some kind of illness that I haven’t had time to sleep off, resulted in me finally collapsing on my living room floor to veg out this evening.

It was at this point that my wife brought in an unexpected package. Of course it was expected, I just didn’t expect to receive it today!

I finally know what it feels like to hold my own book in my hands. And it feels great.
